About NetSense NMS

NetSense NMS is a cloud-based network monitoring system from Extreme Labs, built specifically for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) internet service providers. It monitors OLTs, PON ports, switches, ONUs and customer CPE, with a focus on the last mile, and aims to detect fiber cuts, partial PON failures and device issues before customers report them.

The platform includes an executive dashboard, customizable alerts, zone-based device segmentation with limited regional access, ONU history for Rx power, temperature and voltage, packet loss and latency tracking, and remote device restarts and firmware updates. A TR-069/ACS add-on called Pulse handles remote CPE provisioning and in-home WiFi monitoring. It runs as SaaS, though operators must provide one host machine for the NetSense agent, and an API is available for integration with existing systems.

NetSense is aimed at ISPs ranging from small operators to large telcos, and lists Excitel Broadband in India as a customer. Onboarding includes training, a dedicated support engineer and help with custom integrations.

Best for

  • FTTH internet service providers
  • ISPs monitoring multi-vendor OLT fleets
  • Operators managing customer CPE and WiFi via TR-069
  • Large telcos needing scalable network monitoring

Pros

  • Purpose-built for fiber last-mile monitoring including partial PON failures
  • Free tier covers up to 1,000 nodes with no time limit
  • Monitors OLTs from multiple vendors in one dashboard
  • Zone-based access for field engineers and regional teams

Cons

  • Requires a customer-provided host machine for the monitoring agent
  • TR-069/WiFi management is a separate paid add-on
  • Specialized for ISP networks rather than general IT monitoring

Pricing

Free up to 1,000 nodes, Growth from $0.048/node/month (2,000–25,000 nodes), Pro from $0.032/node/month (25,001–250,000 nodes), and custom Enterprise pricing above 250,000 nodes, with Pulse and Premium Support as add-ons.

NetSense NMS FAQ

What counts as a node?
One node is one monitored element, such as an OLT PON port, switch port, ONT/ONU, CPE or router interface.
Is there a free plan?
Yes, core NMS monitoring is free for up to 1,000 nodes with one agent, six-month data retention and community support, with no credit card or time limit.
Do I need my own hardware?
NetSense runs as SaaS, but you must provide one machine for the agent with at least 2 cores, 4GB RAM, a 1 Gbps NIC and both internal and external IP addresses.
Can it manage customer WiFi devices?
Yes, the Pulse add-on, available on all paid tiers, manages CPE, WiFi quality and firmware remotely via TR-069.
