About Document Chat System

Document Chat System is an open-source, MIT-licensed platform for uploading documents and chatting with AI about their content. Users drag and drop PDFs, DOCX, TXT, Markdown files and images; the system extracts text and metadata (including OCR for scanned files), chunks and embeds the content, and indexes it for semantic and hybrid search via Pinecone or PostgreSQL pgvector. Questions in natural language return answers with citations to source documents using retrieval augmented generation.

Chat runs through OpenRouter (100+ models), OpenAI or ImageRouter, with streaming responses and conversation history. Users supply their own AI provider API keys. The platform includes multi-tenant organizations with role-based permissions, nested folders, team invitations and background job processing with Inngest. It is built with Next.js 15, React 19 and TypeScript.

It can be self-hosted on Vercel or any Docker-compatible platform. An optional Stripe integration lets operators run their deployment as a white-label SaaS with subscription plans and usage limits. Suggested uses include knowledge bases, customer support, developer documentation, compliance libraries and education.
